Meet the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar!
Joey Olsen, is originally from Baltimore, MD but has lived in New Orleans for four and a half years. Jesus Christ Superstar is his first performance at Le Petit Theatre and his debut in musical theatre. Olsen has a background in community theatre most recently playing Freddy in Picasso at the Lapin Agile and John Proctor in The Crucible. He is also a pianist with 13 years of training, performance, and competitions behind him. He would like to thank his parents and grandparents for getting him involved in music at an early age and his partner, Michael, for putting up with for all of his crazy singing around the house. While Olsen studied theatre in undergraduate school his Master’s degree is in public health and he currently works full time in HIV prevention at a local non-profit.
LPT: What is it about this show that led you to auditions?
JO: I’ve always loved musical theatre but never been in a show. Having been in theatre productions before, being cast in a musical has always been on my bucket list of things to do. I made a friend who works in theatre and he let me know about the auditions for Jesus Christ Superstar and then coached me through the audition process – I totally owe him for this.
LPT: Tell me a bit about your character (characters).
JO: I play a priest. My character knows that Jesus is causing trouble and something is going to go down, but I may partially be a secret fan of Jesus and try to mitigate the response from the Sanhedrin. However, I’m not looking to be the only squeaky wheel, especially with Annas around.
LPT: What is the most exciting part of being in a production at Le Petit?
JO: Every day that I’ve come to work here at Le Petit I am awestruck by the fact that I am working on a stage that has such a long and rich history. Knowing that I’ll always be able to say that I was in a production at La Petit is an incredible honor and the people that I am working with here are both fantastic humans and crazy talented. I’m constantly in awe.
LPT: How will you celebrate opening night?
JO: Beignets at Café Du Monde with extra powdered sugar.
LPT: What is your New Year's resolution?
JO: To get a Josh Hartnett fan club going again.
Thanks again Joey!
